tattoos: i want them, i need them.

Lately,  the urge to get another tattoo has been gnawing away at me. I have two at the moment:

a small dove on my foot, that both of my best child hood friends have as well in the same spots (which I got when I was…19 or 20?)
And three peacock feathers on my back between my shoulder blades that I got when I was 21 and going to school in L.A.

I told myself after the peacock feathers that I would wait 5 years (plus, I’m terrified of needles and had to go back to the Tattoo Parlor at least 4 times because each time I came, I would pass out). I’m 27 now and so much has happened since then. I’ve gotten my Masters degree, got married, got a job I love and feel much more stable and solid than I was 8 years ago.

Also I’ve lost two important people in the last 2 years: one of my best childhood friends (not one of the ones who got matching tattoos with me) past away from an aggressive cancer, leaving behind a beautiful 5 year old daughter and my grandma who was so beautiful and also happened to be my favorite person and passed away after suffering with Alzheimers’ disease for 16  long years.

about 5 years into her disease, after a stroke (around 1999)
right before she passed

Before I lost these two people, I was very very lucky to not have to face death and deal with the sense of loss, anger, confusion, and the infuriating feelings of guilt for leaving things unsaid and undone.

Anyways, these things have made me want to get a tattoo in honor of my grandma and friend. A close friend of mine, who has had a difficult life and has suffered so much more loss than I, has these beautiful and simple plain black bands on his forearms. Some of them are thick (an inch or more), others very thin.
my friend’s arm

I had an idea of what I thought the bands might symbolize and knew that he treated each tattooed band with stoic reverence. I finally asked him to tell me about them and what they meant to him. Ever the philosophical fellow, he replied with:
“Humans, like trees, grow rings of memories.”
Which I loved because I have always loved trees (such a silly statement to make, I mean, who doesnt like trees??). I love how they look, how they smell and what they have symbolized throughout man’s existence (life, death, wisdom, nourishment, hope, growth, security, family).

Anywho, I am thinking of getting two thin bands on my left forearm, one in honor of my grandma and one in honor of my childhood friend.
Although, my friend also warned me of getting a tattoo that symbolizes the loss of someone you love in a place that you have to look at all the time. He said that every time he looks at his tattoos it only reminds him of those he has lost and makes him sad.
I thought about this and realized that I think the reason I want them in such a visible spot is to remind me to make the most of the time I have with my loved ones and to act in such a way when I am with them, that on that very distant day in the future when I have no more time with them, I will be left with no regrets.
But, I will continue to evaluate the real reasons I want this tattoo, where it should go, and what it will represent to me.

In the meantime, here are some badass tattoos that I find to be lovely and inspiring (via this cool website I just stumbled on: http://fyeahtattoos.com/

I LOVE this Joy Division album artwork, and apparently so do many people. I have found about a dozen tattoos with this artwork tattooed somewhere on them. I think the forearm one is my favorite.

paris je t’aime!

Bonjour from gay Paris! (How smug do I sound?!),

today was our first of three days in Paris and we’ve certainly made the most of our day. No joking, I think we probably walked 10 miles which is good because I can’t pass a crepe shop or bakery without eating something. and there are ALOT of creperies, (creperes?) and bakeries in Paris.

I also had to stop every few minutes to take photos of some stunning and unique street art.

So far, I think the Latin Quarter is my favorite part of Paris. It’s always buzzing with young people and there are art galleries, book shops and cafes everywhere.

Although, the only other time I’ve been in Paris was during Christmastime and Paris in August, is a strange place. Over half of the shops are closed because we learned that August is apparently when Parisians go on vacation. But there is still LOTS going on and TONS of tourists.

Tomorrow, we are going to try renting bikes (1 euro per hour!) and see the city. http://blog.hostelbookers.com/travel/paris-by-bike/ has some good routes I think. We will see if I survive.

Street Art From Around the World.

Greetings from Central London!

Spending a few days on my own recharging my batteries in a lovely little boutique hotel in Central London (Montague at the Gardens) while my husband and his two best “mates”are on a bachelor party trip to Northern England. We spent the past few days visiting my husband’s family and even though I love them dearly, I am EXHAUSTING.

After sleeping 14 hours, I grabbed a map of Central London from the concierge and spent the entire day walking around the the city, getting lost in the process, taking pictures, and looking like a typical American tourist. Even though the riots are happening all around London, I haven’t come in contact with any of the mayhem, except for hearing the odd police siren.

Walking around London today reminded me of the amazing street art that can be found on the buildings, street signs, doors and where ever there is a blank spot on a wall. I have sort of been collecting pictures of street art I have found during my travels to places I’ve visited: Paris, Prague, London, New York City, the Phillipines, Chicago, and so on. And so I thought I would post pics of some of my favorites. So here they are….

                                                Venice Beach, California (April 2009)
also Venice Beach, CA (April 2009)
                                                           Venice Beach! same visit
I found this one in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands when I was on a cruise with my husband and parents (December 2010)

This is one I stumbled on during my journey today in London (August 2011)
this was during my 3 month stay in the Philippines (December 2006)
 New York City (March 2007)
   New York City…same trip!
Okay, so this one isn’t amazing or anything but it is the only one I spotted on our visit to Paris (December 2008)
To date, the street art in Prague is the most beautiful and abundant of any of the metropolitan cities I have visited, except for maybe NYC (December 2007)
I love this little guy! Prague (December 2008)
Prague again…there is something about this one that I especially love (December 2008)
San Juan, Puerto Rico (January 2011)
 San Diego, ,CA (March 2010)
This is one of the first ones I ever noticed…and probably one of the reasons I love street art so much. I saw this one in Spain when I was going through a dark period in life and so I framed a print of it, hung it in my bedroom to remind me to not give up. (February 2005).

Unfortunately, I have no idea who the artists are for any of these to give credit too. But if anyone has seen these or knows who did them let me know!

Which leads me to ask if anyone reading has any pictures of street art they have found or ones you love. If so, email them to me (forourcity@gmail.com) and tell me the story behind them and I will add them in a new post!

The Artsy Alternative to the Wedding Guestbook.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/71379172/custom-made-hand-drawn-fingerprint-tree
I must admit, I “borrowed” this idea for my own wedding from a blog I found. It was love at first sight. As funds were tight, I had to create my own (and okay… being a bit of a control freak).

I was very pleased with how it turned out! I’ve seen fingerprint trees like mine for $200-$300, but was able to create mine at a fraction of the price.

http://www.etsy.com/listing/71379172/custom-made-hand-drawn-fingerprint-tree?ref=pr_shop

All you really need to make this project happen is a large piece of high quality parchment paper (mine was approximately 20″ x 22″), a pencil, a GOOD eraser, ball point pen of your color choice, (watercolor markers are optional if you want your names and your wedding date on the poster), and water based stamp inks that compliment your wedding colors.

Gathering all the materials is really the easy part, as you probably have most of them somewhere in your house…the more difficult part is donating the time and energy to creating a draft, tracing the drawing, outlining in ink pen and so forth…

…I was thinking this would also be a cute idea for other special events like baby showers, bridal showers, graduation parties, anniversaries, and family reunions.
It is a truly unique way to record the presence of your loved ones who are with you during your most important moments in LIFE.

If this craft project has set your heart a flutter but you lack the time to devote to creating the project (time which I had too much of as an unemployed graduate student!), I have started selling a custom, hand drawn, fingerprint tree at my etsy shop for $75.00.

Almost EVERYTHING on the fingerprint tree can be PERSONALIZED and made custom for your event, including: the paper size, the colors of the ink and dye, the design of the tree, the color of the paper, names (or no names), dates, ect.

You just tell me what you want and I’ll do the rest. I won’t send it until you have seen pictures of the final product and approved of them. I don’t care how many times I have to do it,

you wont get less than perfect!

Also, just for the few of you who might actually read this blog AND be interested in purchasing the fingerprint tree, I’ve created the following coupon code:

“BLOGGERLOVE” for you. Use it and save 15% off your entire purchase.
Here is the link one last time to view the listing at my etsy shop:
